The Full Story

Residents of Whitfield Town and its environs in Kingston recently benefited from a health fair hosted by charity organisation the Leela M. Dorman Care Initiative Foundation.

The ‘We Care’ Health Fair, which was being staged for the 13th year, was held at the Whitfield Town Church of God.

Notable attendee was wife of the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Most Hon. Lady Allen, who the Foundation’s Secretary/Director, Carol Dorman-Higgins, indicated is a registered nurse.

Mrs. Dorman-Higgins told JIS News that several agencies and organisations also collaborated with the Foundation to provide a comprehensive array of complimentary healthcare and support services for persons attending.

These included HIV testing by longstanding partner, the Centre for HIV/AIDS and Research Education and Services (CHARES), and vision screenings, cholesterol checks, and blood pressure monitoring and blood sugar testing by the Diabetes Association of Jamaica.

Support was also provided by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), which had a corps of medical personnel on hand to assist in administering the services dispensed.

These included a doctor, nurse and physiotherapist.

Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Community Safety and Security Division, who also participated, provided pep talks, during which they encouraged the attendees to engage in healthy lifestyles, particularly in relation to dispute resolution.

Other key stakeholder partners included the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and Ministry of Justice.

Mrs. Dorman-Higgins expressed gratitude for the inputs provided by the volunteers and sponsors supporting the health fair.
