The Full Story

Three hundred residents of the Clifton community in Bernard Lodge, St. Catherine, now possess certificates of title to property in the area.
Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, handed over the documents during a ceremony held on Tuesday (July 30) at the Clifton Community Centre.

The provision of the titles was done under the Community Regularisation and Development Programme being implemented by SCJ Holdings, which aims to formalise occupation of informal communities around the various sugar estates across the island.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness (left), enjoys a light moment with Member of Parliament for St. Catherine South, Fitz Jackson and Acting Director for Human Resources, Administration and Community Relations, SCJ Holdings Jamaica Limited, Tanesha Morgan. Occasion was a ceremony for the handover of 300 titles to residents of the Clifton community in St. Catherine, held at the Clifton Community Centre on Tuesday (July 30).

Congratulating the new property owners, Prime Minister Holness said the Government is committed to empowering Jamaicans through “orderly, formal and fair [land] ownership”.

He said that every citizen must have an opportunity to own a piece of Jamaica and create an endowment for generations.

Prime Minister Holness urged the beneficiaries to use the titles to improve their welfare.

“I want you to see your title as economic empowerment. This is giving you some economic power,” he pointed out.

Mr. Holness, in his keynote address, informed that a process has commenced to provide the residents with improved infrastructure.

He said that the area will benefit from a project for which $15 billion has been earmarked to enhance communities with limited infrastructure.

The initiative will focus on the renewal and redevelopment of small inner-city communities.

The Prime Minister urged the residents of Clifton and adjoining communities to “live as one Jamaica”.

“Let us all maintain the community spirit and work together to build and uplift your community,” he urged.

SCJ Holdings is owned by the Government of Jamaica, with a mission to provide efficient land management services that will foster sustainable, economic, and social development in former sugar-dependent communities.
