Registration Fees Established for Data Controllers

The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) has established registration fees for Data Controllers.
Under the Data Protection Act, persons who hold, receive, use, collect or deal with personally identifiable information of any individual are considered data controllers and must register with the OIC.
Registration began on December 1, 2023, and data controllers were given a six-month grace period to register, which expired on May 31, 2024.
Following the fees’ publication, data controllers can now complete their application for registration for the December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024 registration year.
In a public notice published on June 2, the OIC outlined that data controllers have been placed in three categories – Company or Public Authority, Partnership, and Sole Trader or Individual.
First-time registration fees for Companies and Public Authorities is $25,000; Partnerships are required to pay $15,000; while the fee for Sole Traders or Individuals is $7,500.
Annual renewal fees are Company or Public Authority – $15,000, Partnership – $10,000, and Sole trader or Individual – $5,000.
Registration fees are payable by way of direct deposit or funds transfer to the bank account of the Office of the Information Commissioner.

Data controllers must upload proof of payment to the My OIC Portal before submitting their application.
The OIC is advising data controllers that no paper applications or payment of registration fees will be accepted at the Office of the Information Commissioner.
“Once the application has been reviewed and determined, the data controller will be notified of the outcome of the application. Where all required registration particulars have not been provided, or additional information or clarification is required, data controllers will be notified by email,” a section of the public notice read.
