The HEART/NSTA Trust will host the 8th National Skills Competition from May 30 to June 2, at the National Arena in Kingston, under the theme ‘Future Proofing the Economy through TVET’.
According to a bulletin from the Ministry of Education and Youth, over twenty-five new and emerging skills will be showcased across various leading sectors.
The National Skills Competition is positioned by the HEART/NSTA Trust as the premier event to expose and equip young people with the necessary skills to further their education, pursue business opportunities, or advance their careers.
Additionally, the competition serves as a platform to identify and train participants for the WorldSkills international competition, scheduled to take place in Lyon, France, in 2024.
The main objectives of the National Competition are to generate national awareness and appreciation for the WorldSkills movement and the related skill areas associated with the local and international competition; to highlight the value of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and the importance of investing in the skills of young people; and to target youths across the various tiers of the education system who will be inspired to participate in future competitions in their skill area of choice .
Meanwhile, the Ministry is encouraging school administrators to make every effort to support this activity, by allowing students to attend the competition.
The bulletin noted that during the competition, students will have the opportunity to explore the competition village, observe the various events, and support their schools participating in any of the 25 selected skills.
Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, will be the guest speaker at the opening ceremony, which will be held on May 30, starting at 10:00 a.m.
