Buff Bay Primary School in Portland will mark Children’s Day on Friday (May 19) with a health and education fair on the grounds of the institution.
The day’s activities will run from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, and will see scores of children benefitting from health and dental checks by the team from the Buff Bay Health Centre.
There will also be health information and resources, games and entertainment.
Vice Principal of the school, Keisha Braimbridge, told JIS News that the event, under the Child Month theme: ‘Children Need Our Love and Protection…Get Involved,’ is in keeping with the school’s focus on the holistic development of students.
“In the care and protection of children, we have to look at every aspect of their development,” Miss Braimbridge told JIS News.
She noted that other activities have been held in celebration of Child Month, including boys’ and girls’ days, as well as motivational sessions.
On May 23, a Miss and Mr Jamaica Pageant will be held, where students will dress as iconic Jamaicans.
On May 25, the school will celebrate Africa Day, where aspects of the African culture will be on display, including foods, and there will also be a road march.
“The aim of the Child Month celebrations is to remind the students that they are children and they have a right to celebrate, and also how precious they are and how much they impact the society,” Miss Braimbridge said.
“We should not just celebrate them during Child Month; protecting children and doing what is best for them should be an [everyday] thing,” she noted.
