High Commissioner Condemns Bombings in London

Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Gail Mathurin, has joined the global condemnation against the recent terrorist attacks in London, describing the bombings as heinous.
She also expressed deep sympathy and condolences to all those who were affected. Ms. Mathurin praised the emergency services’ response to the attacks, which she said was efficient and effective.
“We are all saddened by this terrible atrocity, but it is inspiring to see the legendary grit and determination of the people of London in effect. I am sure that this same fortitude that brought London through the blitz will see them through once again,” the High Commissioner said.
As yet, there have been no reports to the High Commission of Jamaican causalities. However, the mission will continue to monitor the situation closely.
U.K. Diaspora Advisory Board Representative Paulette Simpson, said the attacks were appalling and came at a time when the city of London was celebrating winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympics and also during a G-8 meeting that could bring positive things for Africa.
“To go from such a high to such a low was really appalling, however, I don’t think Londoners panicked. The impact is still sinking in and we will all have to be a little more vigilant,” she said.
Miss Simpson, who is also the U.K. Representative for the Jamaica National Building Society, said reports from other Jamaican businesses in London on Friday indicated that they had all reopened and resumed operations.
