The winners of the 2021/22 Scientific Research Council (SRC) Essay, Oratory, Poster, and Performing Arts Competition will be announced on Friday (March 4).

The top-three entrants in each category will be awarded for their outstanding and creative interpretations of science and technology at a ceremony scheduled for the Sts. Peter and Paul Church Hall in St. Andrew, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

It will also be aired live on Nationwide News Network (NNN) and later uploaded to the Scientific Research Council (SRC) YouTube channel.

Associate Vice President of Sustainable Energy of the University of the Technology (UTech) Jamaica, Dr. Ruth Potopsingh, will deliver the keynote address at the function.

More than 70 entries were received from students across 50 schools for the 2021/2022 staging of the competition under the theme ‘Sustainable Development: Safeguarding Jamaica’s Future’.

Students were asked to highlight the critical role and importance of policymakers in achieving the country’s sustainable development goals.

Acting Manager of the Information Services Division of the SRC, Marcia Henry, told JIS News that the students have done well in applying science in solving problems that are important to the country.

“The competition] helps students to have a better understanding of what science is and how it is applied to our society. We are looking at how we can help them because some of the work they have done may have commercial possibilities,” she said.

The annual SRC competition is open to students at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

It allows youngsters to express themselves through the arts, promotes awareness of sustainable development, fosters development of leadership skills, and improves their public-speaking ability.
