Former Employee of NSWMA Arrested for Fraud

A former employee of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has been arrested for fraud by the police.
In a statement on the preliminary results of a forensic audit carried out on the NSWMA, in the House of Representatives, on June 6, Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon Noel Arscott, said the crime involves money totalling more than $160 million.
The Financial Investigative Division was asked to carry out a forensic audit of the operations of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, and a report was submitted and forwarded to the police.
“As a result, there has been an arrest of a person for offences under the Corruption Prevention and Proceeds of Crime Act, concerning illicit transactions exceeding $160 million, prior to January 2012,” Mr. Arscott noted.
“I must respect the rights to due process of the person arrested and therefore can offer no more details or information on this matter at this time,” he added.
The audit follows a mysterious fire which occurred at the NSWMA’s Half-Way Tree Road head office, in December, during which numerous documents were destroyed.
