GSAT Students Urged to Grasp Opportunities

Minister of Education and Youth, Maxine Henry Wilson has urged students who sat the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) in March, to grasp opportunities and be the best at what they do.
She was speaking recently at a luncheon hosted by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to celebrate the achievements of 25 children of employees of the agency islandwide, at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.
“The fields are rich with opportunities, grasp these opportunities,” Mrs. Henry Wilson encouraged.
Congratulating the students, Mrs. Henry Wilson urged them to see this as the beginning of the other leg of the journey. “This is another mile along the journey and.it is an important mile because what you absorb and approve will take you further in life,” she pointed out.
Addressing the parents, Mrs. Henry Wilson reminded them that they are their children’s greatest influence, and that they are integral in building character, which is critical at this time, especially with the students entering high school.
In the meantime, Director of the UDC Board, Easton Douglas, said the greatest resource was the people of the country and the UDC once again has expressed its commitment to invest in persons who were the true building blocks and foundation of the nation.
Mr. Douglas congratulated the students and encouraged them to continue to excel.
Omam Johnson, an awardee who will be attending St. George’s College, said the experience felt great and thanked the UDC for putting on the programme. “It feels great, like I am going to a higher level,” said Omam. He added that life would be filled with challenges and that in order to achieve more, he had to aim higher.
Berona Stewart, a parent of one of the students and a UDC employee, said she was proud to be part of a corporation that was interested in the development of her child.
Speaking with JIS News, Corporate Relations Officer at the UDC, Tyrrell Morgan said the UDC hosted the event as a way of honouring and preparing future leaders of the country, knowing that education was the foundation of any strong nation.
