Mo’bay Bus Company gets new vehicles

MONTEGO BAY — Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Michael Henry, on July 7, 2011, handed over two 53-seater Volvo buses valued at US$600,000, to the Montego Bay Metro bus company.
The new vehicles bring to 10, the number of buses in the company’s fleet, to serve its routes in the four western Jamaica parishes of Hanover, St. James, Westmoreland, and Trelawny.
At the handing over ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister’s Western Region headquarters at 10 Delisser Drive, Montego Bay, Minister Henry said that the vehicles are just a fraction of the 30 buses requested by the company.
He said that more should be forthcoming, as soon as his request to Cabinet for 235 new vehicles for the public transportation system is approved.
The Minister said that the provision of adequate buses for the public transportation system will allow people to travel in dignity.
“For me one of the most important issues to resocialise the country… has to be through the way people are allowed to travel, and especially our school children,” he stated.
He said that there has been a 23 per cent increase in the amount of passengers utilising the Montego Bay Metro bus service between October 2009 and present, which indicates that more people are appreciating the service.
