$50m landscaping for North Coast Highway

Minister of Tourism, Hon Edmund Bartlett, says his Ministry has allocated $50 million for landscaping works along Segment 1A of the Northern Coastal Highway in Bogue, St. James.

This development of a second ‘Elegant Corridor’ for the City of Montego Bay, is part of efforts to further boost the appeal of the renowned resort area, he said.

The Tourism Minister made the announcement as he addressed the official opening ceremony for the dualization of the Bogue roadway, recently completed at a cost of approximately $2.2 billion.

He said that the dualization of the Bogue roadway represented a fitting complement to the current “Elegant Corridor”, which runs from the roundabout at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, heading east to the border of St. James and Trelawny at Greenwood.

“It presents us with the pleasurable task of providing a wow effect for our visitors, heading east or west of the City of Montego Bay,” Mr. Bartlett pointed out.

He explained that the allocation of $50 million will allow for a landscape design fitting the profile of the area.

“The aesthetics and beauty of the area will provide the ‘wow factor’ for all, similar to what is taking place on the already established ‘Elegant Corridor’ from the Airport to Greenwood,” he noted.    

He also stated that trees and flowers will be planted, and a programme of maintenance put in place. As part of efforts to beautify sections of the highway, which runs through greater Montego Bay, over $700 million have so far been spent on landscaping and installation of traffic lights. In addition, street lights to be installed in short order along the corridor.
