While you celebrate this year, here are some environmentally friendly practices for householders.
Furniture and Household Items
- Many furniture and household items can be recycled for the holiday season. For example, instead of discarding furniture they can be refreshed, repurposed and renewed. Items that are still usable can be donated or sold at a reduced rate.
Bottles and Food Containers
- Empty drink bottles are usually collected year round and this activity heightens during the Christmas season. Empty bottles can be deposited at the drink company and at supermarkets or community shops islandwide.
- Recycling Partners for Jamaica Limited is owned by the Government that facilitates recycling. Interested persons can either take their empty bottles to or contact Recycling Partners for collection.
- Some used food containers can be washed and reused to store other types of items.
Composting
- Leftovers can be used to make a compost heap. A standard compost heap has several layers which usually includes large sticks, grass or leaves, dirt and kitchen scraps except egg shells, plastic, meat and bones. The items are usually packed in either a rotating drum or a clear space in a backyard.
