Gov’t Committed to Investing in Education

Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the Government is committed to investing in education as the driving force in attaining economic and social prosperity in the country.

“We are on the right track and we must continue if we are to be successful in building a brighter and more prosperous Jamaica,” he said.

Senator Reid was speaking at the Jamaica Teachers’ Association’s (JTA) award ceremony where 14 educators were honoured for sterling contribution to the education system.

The honourees were presented with awards named after past stalwarts of the education fraternity, plaques and certificates at the function held during the JTA’s 52^nd Annual Conference last week in Montego Bay.

Yvonne White, Clive Brown and Juno Gayle, received the Anglin Jones Award; Sandra Hunter and Raymond Simmonds were presented with the W.B.C. (Ben) Hawthorne Award; Tatricia Clarke, Shellyann Hamilton, Rhamona Bromfield, Glenroy Williams and Millicent Davis-Miller, received the R.C. Tavares Award while Beverly McKenzie, Vandolyn Foster, Georgia Green and Uriel McIndoe received the Edith Dalton James Award.

Senator Reid congratulated the awardees “who have excelled, and who have gone beyond the call of duty in the quest to improve the lives of our nation’s children”.

“I take pride in applauding you on the tremendous role that you all have played in nation building.  As the JTA celebrates your achievement, I invite the rest of Jamaica to salute our teachers on the contribution which they continue to make,” he said.

“This awards ceremony is also a lovely way to approach the 2016-2017 academic year.  Once again, congratulations and best wishes to you all,” Senator Reid told the educators.
