Coronation Market Comes Uptown August 1

More than  50 vendors who usually sell their produce at the Coronation Market in downtown, Kingston, will do so at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, on  Hope Road, in Kingston, on Saturday, August 1.

A section of the centre will be transformed into a marketplace, showcasing the rich offerings of Jamaica’s farmers. Push carts will also be available to carry bags to shoppers’ cars.

The Farmers’ Market is one of the first activities of the ‘Independence Village’, being established to feature daily and nightly events ranging from stage shows and concerts to exhibitions and expositions.

The market, which opens at 6:00 a.m. is one of the new initiatives of this year’s Emancipation and Independence celebrations, being held under the theme: ‘Proud and Free…Jamaica 53’.

Speaking at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on July 24, Executive Director of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), Delroy Gordon, said that discussions are ongoing  with farmers.

“We are working closely with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA). We are also working closely with the higglers themselves at the Coronation Market, and Sweet Wood market, so we are expecting well over 50 vendors to be participating,” he said.

Mr. Gordon is urging citizens to support the market and to “avoid the traffic to go all the way downtown.”

“You will be able to get good farm products, good quality, and at a good price,” he added.

The event is being organized by the JCDC, an agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture.
