The Full Story

The Government has budgeted $95.9 million to continue work under the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience Phase II (PPCR II) during the upcoming fiscal year.

Details of the project are contained in the 2021/22 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

The programme is scoped towards improving climate data and information management, with the aim of improving the quality and use of same for effective planning and action at the local and national levels.

The PPCR II, which commenced in April 2013, recorded several notable outcomes up to December 2020.

These include the Meteorological Service of Jamaica’s (MSJ’s) installation of 35 automatic weather stations to capture rainfall data, refurbishing of the MSJ’s radar station, installation of a sea level tide gauge at the Montego Bay pier, and development of a real-time hydromet system by the Water Resources Authority (WRA).

The WRA also installed 32 soil moisture probes.

Among the activities expected to be undertaken in 2021/22 are the MSJ’s installation of 15 automatic weather stations and two sea level tide gauges, and the installation of solar systems for weather stations and the MSJ radar station in Cooper’s Hill, St. Andrew.

The project, which initially ran until September 2015, was extended to April 2021.

It is being executed by the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, with World Bank funding support.
