$7 Million for Chemical Project

A sum of $7.2 million has been allocated in the 2016/17 Estimates of Expenditure towards the National Quick Start Programme Trust Fund project (formerly the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals).

The project seeks to build the endogenous capacity of the country to manage chemicals and hazardous wastes in an environmentally sound manner.

So far the project has completed training in Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and Asbestos; first draft of the National Chemicals Profile prepared; E-wastes collection pilot project implemented for six months; public awareness materials on E-Wastes published; and environmental management consultant contracted for the development of the National Chemical Emergency Risk Management Plan (NCERP).

A legal consultant has also been identified to draft the chemicals legislation.

Targets for this fiscal year are to: complete the National Chemicals Profile; complete the inventory of E-wastes collected; complete the National Chemicals Emergency Risk Management Plan; and draft the Chemical legislation.

The project is funded by the Quick Start Trust Fund.
