58 Outstanding Young Persons to be Honoured

May 26, 2005

The Full Story

Fifty-eight outstanding young persons will be honoured tomorrow (May 27) at the Community Service and Science and Technology awards and luncheon, to be held at Alhambra Inn on Tucker Avenue in Kingston.
The event is one of the major highlights during Child Month (May), which seeks not only to educate the public about the needs of children, but also recognises the achievement of children in various spheres.
Sharon McDonald, Vice Chairperson for the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), told JIS News that every year during the special month, the Committee was committed to honouring children for both community service and for achievement in the areas of science and technology.
The NCMC, she said, targeted children from all parishes in two categories: 7 – 13 years and 14 -18 years for the Community Awards. However, for this year, she noted that the nominations submitted were heavily weighted toward the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew.
“We found that many of the nominees were deeply involved in their communities, so much so that this year rather than having two awardees from each parish, we chose to recognise those, who were worthy, irrespective of the parishes they were from,” she explained.
Mrs. McDonald also said young persons were not usually recognised for volunteerism but rather, in the area of academics. The community services awards, she added, sought to encourage the spirit of volunteerism.
The 58 recipients will receive prizes, which include individual recognition and cash awards.Meanwhile, Carol Hagley, Co-ordinator of the Science and Technology Awards segment, which is being sponsored by the Jamaica Public Service, told JIS News that 30 students would receive awards in the areas of science and technology.
She explained that there were four categories of students to receive first and second place awards. The categories are Grade 4-6 (Category One), Grade 7-9 (Category 2), Grades 10-11 (Category 3) and Sixth Form (Category 4).
Each person will receive cash award, a plaque and certificate. There will also be a teacher’s award in each category.
“We are aware that children need to be encouraged to explore science and technology. We have these awards in order to heighten interest as well as shine the spotlight on those children, who continue to do excellent work in these areas,” Mrs. Hagley said.
Formerly two separate events, the Community Service and Science and Technology Awards were combined two years ago in the interest of cost.
The NCMC is calling on more organisations to support the event, as it seeks to reward and encourage children to become productive citizens.
Patron of Child Month, Douglas Orane, Chairman of GraceKennedy, is expected to attend.
