CARICOM, the Caribbean Community, was established on July 4, 1973, through the Treaty of Chaguaramas, building on earlier efforts like the West Indies Federation and CARIFTA. It aims to promote economic integration, cooperation, and development among Caribbean nations. The 2001 revision of the treaty introduced the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), facilitating the free movement of goods, services, capital, and labour. CARICOM comprises 15 member states and 6 associate members, and operates through various organs, institutions, and councils. Jamaica has played a key role in the Community’s evolution, often leading initiatives in trade negotiations, disaster response, education, and the push for reparations through the CARICOM Reparations Commission.

CARICOM has achieved significant milestones, including the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), CARPHA, CARIFESTA, and the Caribbean Court of Justice. Its impact spans multiple sectors such as health, education, security, trade, and cultural development. Jamaica continues to lead regional efforts, such as chairing the Conference of Heads of Government, advancing the CSME, and hosting major CARICOM events. Through initiatives like the CARICOM Skills Certificate and investment in renewable energy, the Community promotes regional unity and resilience. Cultural and social engagement is also fostered through events like CARIFESTA, the CARIFTA Games, and public health programs, reflecting CARICOM’s commitment to people-centered, sustainable development.
