The Full Story

Thirty-five secondary and tertiary-level students from western Jamaica have been awarded scholarships valued at $6.5 million to support their academic journey.

The presentations were made at the Howard Ward Benefit Foundation’s Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon held on Tuesday (August 13) at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa in St. James.

Of the total awardees, 20 are tertiary students attending accredited universities and 15 are secondary students from schools across St. James, Trelawny and Hanover.

The scholarships were provided through funds generated from the inaugural MoBay Night Run staged by the Foundation in April.

Education Officer, Ministry of Education and Youth Region 4, Dr. Patricia Mumby-Lalor, who addressed the awards ceremony, said that the Ministry is appreciative of the support in enhancing the welfare of the beneficiaries.

She said the Ministry embraces partnerships in providing quality education for the nation’s students.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Youth, I say thank you, and may we continue to work together to support the dreams and aspirations of our students,” she added.

The Foundation will also support an internship programme providing hands-on training for students in operating heavy-duty equipment and the development of a high school in St. James.

“The Ministry of Education and Youth is particularly grateful for the support being provided to the development programme of a high school, not yet named, which will enhance educational infrastructure and resources, ensuring that more students have access to quality education,” she pointed out.

For his part, Chairman of the Foundation, Howard Ward, encouraged the awardees to make use of the opportunities that they have been given.

“Use your education not only to advance your own aspirations but also to contribute to the greater good. The world needs your innovative ideas, your compassion and your leadership.

“We’re proud of you, excited for your future and honoured to be part of your journey. Your accomplishments are testament to your commitment and a source of inspiration to all,” he maintained.
