The Government is to spend $28 billion on a three-year project to improve the water infrastructure in western Jamaica.
Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, made the announcement during his contribution to the 2025/26 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday (March 20).
Dr. Holness informed that that the severe drought that affected western Jamaica disproportionately, prompted the acceleration of major capital works to replace transmission mains in the parishes of Trelawny, St James, Hanover, and Westmoreland.
He noted that the $28-billion three-year project, which will commence in May 2025, will reduce water insecurity and non-revenue water loss.
It involves upgrading 28 kilometres of transmission main from St James to Trelawny and 37.5 kilometres from Lucea to Negril, he pointed out.
On completion, it will benefit more than 250,000 residential and business customers and catalyse development in key sectors.
