The Full Story

Twenty-five per cent of all new agro-park lands will be designated for women, youth and persons with disabilities.

This will be done under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining’s new Feeding the Economy through Empowerment and Development (FEED) Programme.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Floyd Green, made the disclosure at the Gender-responsive Climate Smart Agriculture and Food Systems in the Caribbean National Inception workshop, held on January 23 at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston.

“We have earmarked 25 per cent of all our production incentive programmes… to be given to women, youth and persons with disabilities on preferential terms and to support specific crop lines,” he said.

The FEED programme is a comprehensive development initiative designed to impact women, youth and people with disabilities by encouraging their participation in the sector.

In addition, $390 million under the Ministry’s Production Incentive Programme will be earmarked for access by young farmers to support specific crop lines.

This programme is a major initiative of the Ministry aimed at boosting agricultural production to ensure food security, increase income generation and foreign exchange earnings, and promote rural development.

It focuses on the use of adaptable climate-smart and resilient approaches to improve crop and livestock output.
