Twenty schools have been removed from the shift system in time for the start of this academic year, and an additional 12 are targeted to be removed later in the year.

This was noted by Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, during a recent  press briefing  at the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Minister said this was done using the Ministry’s existing resources, and that new classrooms were added in some schools to accommodate students.

Rev. Thwaites said the introduction of a mechanism known as ‘the extended day’ will allow for this change.

“(This) is a tried and tested mechanism of staggering students, but each gets a full day of instruction, rather than basically the half day that the shift system allowed,” he explained. He added that teachers and administrators have been prepared for the implementation of this method.

He said the Ministry adjusted the level of intake in these schools and also directed parents and students in their preferences toward schools that have space.

“We believe that the elimination of the shift system will improve teaching and learning by increasing teacher-pupil contact time and also remove some of the vulnerabilities which our students experience being on the streets at very early or very late hours,” Rev. Thwaites said.

It is anticipated that the remaining 48 schools still on shift will be taken off that system by 2017.
