$2.1 Billion for Infrastructure Projects in Sugarcane Belts

April 7, 2013

The Full Story

The Sugar Transformation Unit is to receive $2.1 billion, as the Government sustains its thrust to develop a sustainable private sector-led cane industry by 2015.
Another $96 million will be used to repair sugar cane roads at Appleton, Bernard Lodge, Everglades, Frome, Golden Grove, Monymusk, and Worthy Park factories.
Details of this allocation are contained in the Estimates of Expenditure for the 2013/14 fiscal year, which are now before the House of Representatives.
The project also aims to coordinate the smooth and effective implementation of the Jamaica Country Strategy for the Adaptation of the Sugar Cane Industry (2006-2020).
During the year, the project will seek to: rehabilitate roads and clean regional drains in sugar-dependent areas in St. Thomas and Westmoreland; establish infrastructure in two areas designated for the establishment of agro parks; complete installation of infrastructure at the barracks relocation sites, and begin construction of houses for sugar workers.
The project will also carry out upgrading of community amenities such as schools, health centres, and sports facilities in sugar development areas, and provide loans for farmers to install drip irrigation systems.
