A total of 1,588 surgeries have been completed under the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Code Care project.
Portfolio Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, made the disclosure during his contribution to the 2024/25 Sectoral debate in the House of Representatives on May 7.
The programme was implemented in 2022 to reduce the backlog of surgery cases in hospitals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The procedures covered included hernia, hysterectomy, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), cataract and pterygium.
Dr. Tufton informed the House that the programme will end this year.
“We had set a target of 2,000 surgeries for persons waiting for over a year. We have done 1,588 surgeries, 74.9 per cent of target.
“This has effectively cleared up a lot of the backlog. We want to say to all those who participated, it’s a very positive development and we thank you, including some private-sector entities we engaged,” he said.
