Budgetary support, in the sum of $14.5 million, has been provided in the 2010/11 Estimates of Expenditure currently before Parliament, for the development of a National Statistics System by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).
The undertaking, which started in October 2009, aims to support the development of an effective system that will enhance data management in the private and public sectors.
To date, work by a planning committee, established to oversee a statistical conference and planning, is progressing. Additionally, recruitment of staff to execute the project is also being conducted.
It is anticipated that the framework and structure for the National Statistic System will be established during the 2010/11 fiscal year. The project, which is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will run until October 2012.
