$105M Rehab Works For Bodles Research Station

The Government of Jamaica has allocated $105 million for the rehabilitation of select facilities at the Bodles Research Station, which will directly impact the level of support given to farmers.

Details of the project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, are provided in the 2022/2023 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

The original project duration of April 2018 to March 2022 has received an extension of April 2022 to March 2023.

Anticipated physical targets for the 2022/2023 period include the commencement of construction of dairy workers’ housing and installation of domestic water tanks, pond liner, and irrigation fittings at the fruit tree nursery.

Renovation work is also earmarked for the small ruminant house and milk-testing laboratory.

Contracts completed in the 2018 to 2021/22 period include renovation of two houses, project office, sanitary facilities and piggery; the restroom at the stockyard; and the crop research office and post-harvest facility.

The biological control lab of the apiculture office, library and server room, citrus budwood greenhouse, pesticide house and roof, milking system and hardening facility were also renovated during the period.

Other contracts completed 2018 to 2021/22 are the installation of security lighting, and fire extinguishers, as well as security access upgrade in renovated areas.

An energy audit was also conducted, an ICT upgrade undertaken in the Bio-Control lab, and an overhaul of the sewage system was also completed.

Construction of a barn facility, chlorination house and perimeter wall at South Bodles were also done.
