$1.05 Billion Earmarked for Primary and Secondary Infrastructure Programme

Approximately $1.05 billion has been earmarked for the Ministry of Education and Youth’s Primary and Secondary Infrastructure Programme.
The sum is contained in the 2023/24 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
The main objectives of the project include the construction of classrooms and other amenities for the elimination of the shift system and overcrowding at 17 high and two primary schools.
Additional targets are construction of the Dias Infant school, and upgrade of electrical infrastructure at 10 high and three primary schools, as well as the provision of security fencing for 17 primary and three secondary institutions.
Achievements up to December 2022 include the completion of fencing works at Papine High in St. Andrew and Cedric Titus High in Trelawny.
Additionally, electrical upgrade was carried out at Kemps Hill High, Garvey Maceo High and Denbigh High in Clarendon; Tarrant High and Charlie Smith High in Kingston; Waterford High and Greater Portmore High in St. Catherine, and St. Mary Technical.
The project is being funded by the Government of Jamaica and implemented through the National Education Trust (NET).
