7th Day of Christmas – Sorrel Drink

Sorrel, Jamaica’s traditional Christmas drink.

Steeped/drawn, boiled or blended are some of the common methods of making sorrel. It is an essential drink at Christmas time for many Jamaicans who would feel cheated if they did not have any sorrel during the season. Many persons have their own recipe and method of making sorrel. Do you have a special recipe?

Here’s a recipe for making Sorrel Drink from the JIS publication, “Our Culinary Heritage”:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb sorrel
  • 2-4 ozs ginger
  • 2 quarts water
  • sugar
  • white rum
  • wine (optional)
  • 8-12 pimento grains

Method

  • Wash sorrel thoroughly using fingers to lift it from the water
  • Put into container, preferably enamel, stainless steel or earthenware
  • Scrape ginger
  • Grate or beat the ginger and add it to the sorrel
  • Add pimento grains
  • Bring water to a boil and pour over the sorrel
  • Allow this to stand for 4-6 hours
  • Strain
  • Sweeten to taste
  • Add rum and/or wine if desired
  • Serve over ice
