The Full Story

The HEART/NSTA Trust is inviting volunteers to join their trainees and staff as they execute Labour Day projects across Jamaica.

Labour Day will be observed on Thursday, May 23 under the theme ‘Ramp up di access…show that you care’, with a focus on persons with disabilities, the elderly and the vulnerable.

“We will be across the island constructing ramps, mounting signage, establishing accessible parking spaces, installing handrails, improving restroom accessibility and refurbishing activities will be taking place,” Managing Director, HEART/NSTA Trust, Dr. Taneisha Ingleton, advised.

She was addressing Friday’s (May 10) Worker’s Week and Labour Day launch, held at the offices of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport in Kingston.

In region one, teams will be dispatched to Stimulation Plus Child Development Centre and Genesis Academy.

For region two, work will be undertaken at Yallahs Primary School, an off-site for Randolph Lopez School of Hope which caters to students with special needs.

“For Portland, we will be at Drapers All-Age School and for St. Mary, we’ll be at the Port Maria Vocational Training Institute on Stennett Street and Edge Hill School of Special Education. For region three, we are going to be at the Mustard Seed Community Jacob’s Ladder in Moneague,” she said.

Dr. Ingleton pointed out that the facility in Moneague was chosen, as it is home to approximately 180 residents with over 18 different mental and physical disabilities.

Projects will also be executed at West Haven Children’s Home in Hanover, Llandilo School of Special Education in Westmoreland and Montego Bay Learning Centre in St. James, Woodlawn School of Special Education in Manchester, and Windsor School of Special Education in Clarendon.

“Our trainees, our instructors, our support staff and anybody across Jamaica who would want to be on those projects, you are welcomed to work with us on that day,” Dr. Ingleton said.

She added that HEART will also conduct minor repairs, provide bed linen for sick bays, paint murals, pedestrian crossings, and perimeter walls.
