Spectrum Management Authority (SMA) has taken the top spot in the 2022 Best Decorated Building Competition, organised by the Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY).
Second place went to the Spanish Town Municipal Building, which is a part of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, while the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce came in third.
The competition was part of the MOEY’s Jamaica Day (February 25) activities, under the theme ‘Celebrating Jamaica (Building Character: Hearts through the Arts)’. Ministries and agencies were encouraged to decorate their buildings in true Jamaican style.
Managing Director of the SMA, Dr. Maria Myers Hamilton, said the agency combined elements of the past and present to create a unique design.
“We’re in our 60th year of Independence. And sometimes we tend to focus [only] on what is to come, which is a fantastic future for Jamaica, but we also have to remember where we’re coming from. The world is changing. Yes, there is a pandemic, but there’s so much opportunity for Jamaicans and Jamaica,” she said.
Dr. Myers Hamilton argued that the competition was the ideal avenue to showcase the talented SMA community.
“Our team feels so proud and amazing that we were recognised. Everything was done by the people at the SMA,” she said.
“If you notice, we’re trying to move with the Government in revitalising the City of Kingston. Kingston is such an amazing and culturally rich environment that people have forgotten what it was in the days of long ago,” Dr. Myers Hamilton added.
According to the Chairman of the Jamaica Day Planning Committee, Marlon Williams, five entries were received this year. Breaking away from tradition, he said the competition was extended to government agencies within ministries this time around.
“Collectively, they were very good entries. As a matter of fact, we had quite a task determining who should get third place, because a lot of effort was put into the decorating, and they are all very well-decorated buildings this year,” Mr. Williams said.
