The Full Story

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining is embarking on a rapid cattle tagging blitz in St. Elizabeth as part of its ongoing National Animal Identification and Traceability System (NAITS).

The initiative, which started in Mountainside on Saturday (Dec. 6), aims to clear backlogs and register cattle ahead of the festive season.

Speaking to farmers in Flagaman, St. Elizabeth ahead of the blitz, portfolio Minister, Hon. Floyd Green, urged farmers to take advantage of the opportunity.

He said that the tagging blitz helps to improve livestock traceability and management, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

He noted that it also provides protection against praedial larceny.

“The best way to stop them [praedial larcenists] is to be able to trace the animals,” he said.

Minister Green noted that while the rapid tagging programme will start with cattle, it will extend to other livestock.

He encouraged farmers to cooperate with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and Ministry teams to ensure that the tagging process is efficient and transparent.
