The Full Story

Several schools in St. Ann have kicked off the 2023/24 academic year on a very positive note.

Among these are Marcus Garvey Technical High School, Ocho Rios Preparatory School, and Ocho Rios High School where the administrators laid the groundwork for the year by providing a nurturing and conducive environment for students to learn and grow.

“With renewed energy, innovative approaches, and a commitment to academic excellence, we have set the stage for a successful academic year ahead,” Marcus Garvey Principal, Anniona Jones, told JIS News on Monday (September 4).

“Under the guidance of dedicated educators and a supportive administrative team, we have implemented various strategies to ensure a smooth transition for both new and returning students. With a focus on individualised attention and holistic development. We have also fostered an environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth,” she added.

Ms. Jones said the school has not been affected much by teacher shortage, noting that most of the available positions have already been filled, so that students will not be at a disadvantage going forward.

She said the institution’s 1,700 students were out in their numbers and that everything points to a very good term for the school that was named after Jamaica’s first National Hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

Ms. Jones said Marcus Garvey Technical has also implemented a comprehensive support system to address the individual needs of students.

She pointed out that the tutoring programmes, counselling services, and mentorship initiatives have created a nurturing environment where students receive the necessary guidance and support to excel academically and psychologically.

Ocho Rios Preparatory, also had a seamless start to the new school year.

“Through meticulous planning and the dedication of the staff, Ocho Rios Preparatory has successfully created an atmosphere that fosters intellectual curiosity, creativity, and character development,” Principal, Beverly Rose, explained.

“Ocho Rios Preparatory has embraced innovative teaching methodologies, including project-based learning and collaborative assignments, to cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills among our students. By encouraging active participation and fostering a sense of ownership in their education, the school empowers students to become independent learners and prepares them for the challenges of the future. We are expecting a very exciting school year,” she added.

For his part, Principal of Ocho Rios High School, Marvin Coulson, said the institution has embraced the new academic year with enthusiasm and dedication.

He noted that with a strong focus on academic excellence and holistic development, the school has created an environment conducive to learning, growth, and self-discovery.

Mr. Coulson said that in recognising the diverse interests and talents of the student population, Ocho Rios High School offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and clubs.

These opportunities, he pointed out, will allow students to explore their passions and develop essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and perseverance.

Mr. Coulson added that the aim is to nurture well-rounded individuals, preparing them for future success in both academic and personal endeavours.
