The Full Story

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting and empowering women, noting that their contributions are critical to Jamaica’s success.

“Today, we come together to celebrate the strength and resilience of Jamaican women on International Women’s Day, and its more than just the courtesy [of] recognition. It is truly a reaffirmation of the commitment of the Government to women. It is a demonstration of the progress that the nation has made, particularly by supporting and empowering women,” Dr. Holness said.

He was addressing a special edition of the post-Cabinet press briefing in observance of International Women’s Day and Peace Day at Jamaica House on Tuesday (March 4). International Women’s Day will be observed on March 8.

Dr. Holness said he was proud to head a Government that recognises the vital contributions of women to the country’s success.

“I am especially proud of the women that serve in my Cabinet – five women. and I believe that would be the most ever in any Cabinet; and the women who [now] serve as Members of Parliament… I believe that would have been the most women serving in Parliament at any time in our history. We note, as well, that 38 per cent of the Senate [are] women,” he stated.

The Prime Minister further noted that Jamaica boasts several women leaders who are at the helm of ministries and organisations.

“I have appointed the first Cabinet Secretary, who is a woman; the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs [and Foreign Trade], the first female Minister of Finance [and the Public Service] and, of course, the first head of the armed forces of Jamaica and [one of] only… two internationally,” he informed.

Dr. Holness said these women are leaders, decision-makers and trailblazers, adding that they have done an amazing job in uplifting people.

“Their dedication and service inspires us all, proving that when women lead, we move forward. But all of them have done their jobs, not because they are women. They have done their jobs because they are smart, intelligent, courageous and innovative. So, it’s not about their gender; it’s about their capabilities,” he pointed out.

Dr. Holness said his Administration has taken steps to remove any barrier that would impede capability.

“If you are capable, it matters not your gender. Once you have the capability to do the job, you will have a fair chance at that job,” he declared.
