The Full Story

Acting Principal of Orange Bay Primary School in Portland, Morlette Miller, says several initiatives are being pursued to strengthen parental support at the institution.

She says this is imperative in assisting to “develop our students academically and socially”.

“We need more parents and community members on board so we can continue to grow. The school is located in a rural community where we have a problem with parental support. We are working on initiatives to help get more parents on board,” she told JIS News.

Meanwhile, Ms. Miller said despite infrastructural challenges, Orange Bay Primary continues to excel academically and in track and field, with students performing so impressively that high schools eagerly welcome them upon graduation.

She indicated that of the 15 students who sat the most recent Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examinations, four earned places at Titchfield High School, while the others were placed at Happy Grove, Marymount, Annotto Bay, and Port Antonio High.

Ms. Miller noted, however, that the institution, with an enrolment of 97 students, is urgently in need of a link way, as children in grades one to three are unable to access restroom facilities during rainfall because the buildings are not connected.

The Principal further pointed out that the school’s athletic success is driven by raw talent and the dedication of its staff, given the absence of basic facilities for proper training, noting that “we need a field so that we can have [the students] getting practice”.
