The Full Story

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the newly reconstructed Little London Police Station in Westmoreland reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the country’s security infrastructure while enhancing the working environment for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Speaking during the official opening on Friday (November 28), Dr. Holness noted that the new facility represents the standard the Government envisions for police stations across Jamaica.

“[The facility] was conceptualised in 2017 in a partnership programme between the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the Government of Jamaica. The idea is that the NHT’s role is not just to build houses, it is to build communities. An important part of the community is security, and therefore the NHT has invested in several of these police stations,” he outlined.

“This police station [is] more than just an investment in security. God forbid any future disaster, [this police station] is built for sustainability and resilience. It will have its own backup power. It is built, very firmly and strong, and it will be able to serve this community as an area that you could consider a first response and secure area in the event of a disaster,” Dr. Holness stated.

The Little London Police Station was built under the Government’s Refurbishing/Construction of Police Station Programme, aligned with Vision 2030 Jamaica’s objective of strengthening public institutions and fostering safer, more cohesive communities.

The upgraded two-storey, 5,300-square-foot structure houses offices, living quarters, human-rights compliant detention cells, a sewer system, paved parking areas, and kitchen and laundry facilities. Additional features include solar power generation and rainwater harvesting systems.

The $200 million project, which commenced on April 26, 2022, was completed over 30 months by contractors procured through the NHT in partnership with the JCF and the Ministry of National Security and Peace, under Government procurement regulations.

Dr. Holness further emphasised that the new station stands as a symbol of progress and resilience.

“It gives me great pleasure to open this station. It is a symbol that [work by] the Government continues. It is a symbol that we are still making progress… that we are returning to normalcy. But it is also a symbol that we are building forward, better,” he stated.

State Minister in the Ministry of National Security and Peace, Hon. Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, who represented Portfolio Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, said the station’s opening forms part of the Government’s aggressive programme to rebuild and modernise police facilities.

“The Little London Police Station stands as the sixth brand-new police station being commissioned into service in 2025 alone. Westmoreland is privileged to account for two of the six, with both Fulham and Little London now boasting modern, fit-for-purpose stations,” she said.

Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn commended the resilience of police personnel who continued to serve under challenging conditions. She noted that the new and rehabilitated facilities are being constructed with enhanced resilience features.

“A police station must be a place of refuge, a centre of stability in moments of crisis. It must be equipped to withstand even a Category Five hurricane and remain operational,” she emphasised.

Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn said the Government remains unwavering in its mission to improve public safety, strengthen the JCF and ensure that the nation’s policing infrastructure reflects the modern, capable and resilient force that Jamaica deserves.

“To the officers who will serve at this location (Little London), I hope that this new station will empower you, and remind you every day that the Government and the people of Jamaica really value what you do,” the State Minister added.
