Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, is encouraging residents to take part in the parish’s Emancipation and Independence festivities.
Councillor Delancy told JIS News that the Municipality hosted its Emancipation-Independence church service on July 27 at the Seaford Town Seventh-day Adventist Church, adding that there are other activities slated to be held across Westmoreland in the next few days.
“Next on the agenda for our celebration will be our Emancipation vigil on July 31 at Norman Square in Savanna-la-Mar, right in front of the court house. It will run from 8:00 p.m. to 12 midnight,” he informed.
Mayor Delancy said the event will feature performers from the parish and its environs, as well as persons who are known across the island.
“We will have performances that depict our heritage and our history. There will also be traditional Jamaican food on sale, so persons can indulge in our local cuisine,” he said.
The Mayor, who also serves as Councillor for the Bethel Town division, said he will be collaborating with the Amity Community Outreach group to host a back-to-school health fair at the St. Leonard’s Primary School on Emancipation Day, Thursday (August 1).
“Persons should come out and bring the children with them so they can get free medical check-ups [among other benefits],” he said.
The Mayor pointed out that the Municipality is set to host its annual Civic Ceremony on Independence Day, August 6 at Norman Square.
The ceremony commences at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. that evening, persons are invited to return to the same venue for the parish’s Independence Day concert. This will close out the celebrations for the Emancipation and Independence period.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being observed under the theme ‘Jamaica 62: One Love…To the World’.
