The Full Story

Students across the island have until January 25 to submit applications for the Scientific Research Council (SRC) Essay, Oratory, Performing Arts and Poster Competition (EOPP).

The annual contest allows students to incorporate the arts into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to foster creativity and innovation.

It is in keeping with the organisation’s mandate of popularising and promoting the sciences among students.

The SRC’s Technical Information Officer, Latanniya Johnson, told JIS News that for this year’s competition, pupils at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels are invited to submit pieces under the theme ‘STEMing into the Future’.

The creative works must identify sustainable solutions to some of the challenges in the country and the wider Caribbean.

“We want them to think of the myriad of ways we can head into the future using STEM, whether it is a technological breakthrough or advancements in healthcare or food security,” Ms. Johnson explained.

She noted that students are “free to register for any one of the categories but should bear in mind that the oratory component is linked to the essay.

This means that only those students with the top essays will matriculate to the oratory category of the competition”.

Students can register online by clicking on the application link on the SRC’s social media platforms.

Ms. Johnson is encouraging applicants to be mindful of the competition’s rules and guidelines that have been shared with educational institutions islandwide.

The winners will be announced in February.

Persons can contact the SRC for further information at 876-927-1771-4.
