The Full Story

More community groups will benefit from free training in agro-processing as the Scientific Research Council (SRC) seeks to empower more Jamaicans to create sustainable livelihoods from local materials.

A series of workshops are being offered in several areas, including natural juice processing, sauces, seasons, and personal care products such as bar soaps and bodywash.

Community Development Coordinator, Yanique Rodgers, told JIS News that the training includes theory and practical sessions covering good sanitation and hygiene practices, pricing, product formulation, and packing and labelling methods.

“Our primary aim is to assist community groups with technical training so that they can produce products in line with commercial standards,” she said.

Ms. Rodgers told JIS News that the next training session will be held in the first quarter of the new calendar year.

Interested persons are encouraged to apply when the call for expression of interest becomes available on the SRC’s social media platforms.

“This is a big incentive for community groups; however, we do ask that the groups provide the venue, raw materials and equipment and we will go to them and train them,” she said.

The SRC is the agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport that is mandated to foster the development of scientific research, serve as a repository of scientific information, and facilitate the development, application, transfer and/or improvement of the technology of such research for the country’s benefit.

It also serves as an enabler in the creation of new industries and supports technical processes with stakeholders.
