Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, has reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening security measures to foster a conducive environment for real estate investments in Jamaica.
“I want real estate to be done in a safe environment. Your investment in real estate must remain valuable and increase value,” he said.
Dr. Chang was addressing the Realtors Association of Jamaica’s International Real Estate Conference and Homeowners’ Expo 2024 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St. James, on Friday (April 19).
The National Security Minister said the Administration recognises the contribution of real estate investment to national development and has dedicated significant resources to ensuring a safe environment for such developments.
These include spending to boost police resources and personnel, noting that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) complement now stands at 14,200 from previous levels of 9,000 to 11,000 officers.
“So, it is important that you are aware that in recognising the benefit of real estate development and what it brings to the country, the Government intends to put in place the necessary supporting regulatory infrastructure to ensure that you can invest freely,” Dr. Chang said.
“Understand that we want to see the investments. The country needs it, and we want to ensure that the facilities are there. The future of realtor profession is bright,” he added.
Dr. Chang said that while progress has been made, there is still work to be done.
Citing the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, he said there is focus on promoting officers based on merit, qualifications, and commitment to the force.
He noted that the new Commissioner will be implementing several measures over the next six months “so, you will see changes in addition to what you have already seen”.
The three-day realtors conference, from April 18 to 20, showcased the finest offerings from the Jamaican, Caribbean, and Latin American real estate markets under the theme ‘Future of Investments in Real Estate: Destination Jamaica’.
It attracted a diverse spectrum of real estate professionals and stakeholders, ensuring dynamic discussions and unparalleled networking opportunities.
