I extend heartiest congratulations to our spectacular athlete, Alia Atkinson, Jamaican sportswoman, Olympian, gold medalist and joint world record holder for the 100 metre breaststroke at the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar on December 6.
I was in Cuba when the news came of Alia’s outstanding achievement in Doha. Heads of Governments from across the Caribbean region who were in Cuba, celebrated with Jamaica as if Alia was their own. She is the pride and joy of the entire Caribbean.
Alia has made history by becoming the first woman of African-decent to hold the world record in any swimming event in 40 years. What outstanding achievements for this daughter of Jamaica. She has brought immense glory and honour to her country.
The Government and people of Jamaica have always believed in Alia’s immense talent. That is why we have supported her, and will continue to stand by her, as she achieves even greater accomplishments in the months and years to come. I commend the Sports Development Foundation and private sector entities for supporting Alia on her remarkable journey.
Alia, the entire nation of Jamaica is proud of you, women across the world are beaming with pride, people around the globe hail you as an inspiration, your country salutes you, I am very proud of you.
You are a shining example of what is good and great about Jamaica. You are a sterling ambassador of Brand Jamaica. You remind us all that talent, hard work and dedication always pay off.
