Community cricket teams that wish to participate in the Social Development Commission’s (SDC) National Community Cricket Competition have until Friday (March 4) to submit their applications.
The annual cricket competition, which is now in its 15th year, is part of the SDC’s Sports for Community Development Programme to attract and engage residents in exciting, participatory and unifying activities.
The programme aims to empower community groups to benefit from and support sustainable sports development programmes in their communities.
“The SDC believes that through sports, we will be able to increase youth inclusion and community participation while raising awareness about the role of community organisations in Jamaica’s economic development,” SDC Public Relations Manager, Mandel McKulsky, told JIS News.
“[The] interaction, through sport, gives us a unique opportunity to maintain positive engagement among youth islandwide,” she added.
The National Community Cricket Competition takes the T/20 format and sees teams competing at the parish level first, with the parish winners vying for the title of national champions.
After a successful pilot in 2019, the Women’s T/10 and a Masters T/20 contests were incorporated into the national competition, increasing participation and community engagement.
Applications for the cricket competition are available at the SDC’s website, www.sdc.gov.jm, and parish offices.
All application forms must be returned to the respective parish offices by the close of business on Friday, March 4.
