South Manchester Youth and Sports Council to Stage Netball Competitions

The South Manchester Youth and Sports Council will, on July 27 start a series of netball competitions at the Bethabara Primary and Infant School to engage young females in activities that can showcase their talents.
The Council consists of 16 active youth clubs representing 14 communities, and 10 teams will participate in the competitions. The events are sponsored by Member of Parliament for South Manchester, Michael Peart, Councillor for the New Port Division, Anthony Bryce, businessman, Roy Douglas, former South Manchester Youth Leader, Meron Thompson, and the Social Development Commission (SDC).
Secretary for the Youth and Sport Council, Ms. Cordia McBean told JIS News that the events came about as a result of the group seeing a need to have young girls active during school holidays.
“It is now summer holidays and a lot of young females are out of school, and we decided to have this event to engage them in a positive way. We will make this an annual event because there are a lot of talents in our clubs and we must expose them,” Ms. McBean stated.
Meanwhile the SDC Development Officer for the area, Kirk Robinson said the events will help the youngsters to gain empowerment as they showcase their talents, “This is one area to generate their energies, netball is a highly professional sport, and it generates income from being a player and in the area of coaching, and these ladies will benefit from the six weeks of competitions,” Mr. Robinson said.
At the end of the competitions the winning team will receive $10,000 and a trophy, while the second runner up will receive $5,000 and a trophy. The most valuable player will also receive a trophy.
