The Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) will host a two-day Starch Stakeholders’ session aimed at raising awareness about the potential and development of Jamaica’s starch industry.
The event will take place at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Regional Headquarters, 2 Hermitage Road, St. Andrew, from September 19 to 20, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.
Under the theme ‘Starch Fueling Global Impact: From Farm to Function’, the session will underscore the industry’s significant role in addressing poverty alleviation, food security, nutrition and promoting trade and investment.
The event is timely, particularly as global demand for sustainable and resilient food systems continues to rise and with the starch sector emerging as a key player in enhancing agricultural value chains.
It will provide an opportunity for stakeholders from government and non-governmental organisations, academia, and the private sector to explore how the starch industry can drive innovation and bolster Jamaica’s agricultural sector.
The two-day event will feature remarks from the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, and a keynote address by Chairperson of the ISO Technical Committee 347 on Data-Driven Agrifood Systems, Dr. Raphael Andres Ferreyra, who will share valuable insights on how global standards can support the growth of Jamaica’s starch industry.
The session is expected to ignite dialogue on advancing the country’s agricultural landscape and strengthening food security in a sustainable manner.
For information on how to participate in the sessions, persons may contact the BSJ at (876) 276-9828 or send an email to afarrell@bsj.org.jm.
