The Full Story

The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is using the Bushfire Warning Index provided by the National Meteorological Service to better anticipate and respond to bush fires across the island, says Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie.

He was making his contribution to the 2024/25 Sectoral Debate on Tuesday (May 28) in the House of Representatives.

Minister McKenzie informed that bush fires account for the highest number of genuine fire calls that the Brigade receives.

He said that in 2023, firefighters were called to put out 6,443 bush fires across all parishes, representing an increase of 81 per cent when compared to the 2022.

“Since the start of this year, we have already seen the Brigade dealing with 2,134 bush fires. The Brigade is now anticipating where these fires will occur by using the Bush Fire Warning Index.

“These initiatives are having the desired effect, as the Brigade has been able to respond strategically and save hundreds of hectares of residential, commercial and government lands, rather than being blindsided by bush fires,” he said.

Minister McKenzie said that the Government will continue to invest significantly in the JFB.
