Managing Director of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), Omar Sweeney, says construction of the new Adelphi Health Centre in St. James is close to completion.
The project is being undertaken by the entity at a cost more than $40 million with funding made available through a grant from the European Union (EU).
Mr. Sweeney told JIS News that while the new clinic building is “mostly complete”, some “minor work remains” for it to be fully operational, “and so I am not really calling it completed until [that is done]”.
In addition, he said that the Ministry of Health and Wellness will be paving the grounds of the facility.
The new health centre includes a pharmacy, dental offices, sterilisation and nebulisation rooms, consultation rooms, offices for the public health inspector and for registration and records, restrooms, laundry room, and a lunchroom/kitchenette.
The previous building had a number of challenges such as inadequate office space and sanitary facilities, leaking roof and collapsed section of the ceiling, as well as inadequate sewage management system.
Mr. Sweeney noted that initially, the plan was to demolish the existing clinic, but a decision was made to keep it as “they may want to use it for some other purpose.”
“And so some of those conversions are still going on, but in terms of our (JSIF) investment in constructing the new clinic we are [largely] finished there, but for the building to be fully operational and usable, some other things have to be done,” he noted.
The new, modern Adelphi Health Centre will benefit the 21 members of staff at the facility and the approximately 2,000 residents served per month from the communities of Lima, Content, Paisley, Chatham, Goodwill, Dumfries, Somerton, Blyeston, Orange, Sudbury, and Moore Park.
