JCF and JDF receive fuel from Petrojam

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) received a fuel donation of 50,000 litres, valued at $5 million, today (November 16), to support their crime fighting efforts.
The fuel, which is to be apportioned equally between the two entities, was provided by the Energy and Mining Ministry, through Petrojam Limited, and handed over at the Ministry.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, National Security Minister, Hon. Dwight Nelson, said that the crime fighting efforts by the security forces demand certain commodities, key among them, fuel.
“We have, to a large extent, sought to provide the law enforcement agencies with vehicles, but the provision of vehicles is not enough, because if we don’t provide fuel to these vehicles, then the mobility of these law enforcement agencies would be severely hampered,” the Minister opined.

He said that the donation by Petrojam is a significant contribution to the Government’s law enforcement programme, and “is some form of consolation to the security forces, that the work that they have been doing, that the sacrifices that they have made, is appreciated and highly respected.”
The Minister urged the JCF and JDF to manage and monitor the use of this and other fuel in a judicious manner.
Energy and Mining Minister, Hon. James Robertson, said the Ministry is aware of the serious strain the National Security Ministry has come under in recent times, in terms of the demands in peace-keeping and good operation, and that the donation is “a token of our appreciation.”
The Minister emphasised that it is important the Energy Ministry work with the security forces in helping to keep Jamaica secure, and pledged to work more closely with the National Security Ministry.
Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington said he is thankful for “this very kind gesture from Petrojam.”
“This supply is very timely and it hits right to the core, where we really need it. As you know, force mobility is most crucial, especially at this time, as we attempt to bring the crime and security situation under control and one of the most costly inputs to force mobility is the supply of fuel,” he said.
He assured that the JCF would use the fuel efficiently, “to enhance the delivery of service to the citizens of this country.”
Chief of Defence Staff of the JDF, Major General Antony Anderson, said that like the police, the JDF also depends greatly on the supply of fuel to keep its operations going, not just in terms of land systems, but boats and aircrafts which are used in the national interest on a daily basis.
Chairman, Petrojam Limited, Angus Gordon, said with the contribution, the company hopes to assist in alleviating some of the issues being faced within the Ministry and to “set a trend of participation that others will follow.”
