Mavis Bank Coffee Factory to go Green

As part of efforts to ‘go green’ and reduce its impact on the environment, the Mavis Bank coffee factory, in rural St. Andrew, is to implement a waste water management system.
Speaking with JIS News during a tour of the factory on July 15, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Senator Norman Grant said the system is very significant, as the facility aims to become environmentally friendly.
“At Mavis Bank, we have just engaged the construction of a waste management system that will do two things – convert the waste (pulp) into manure and convert the mucilage from the coffee into energy,” he said.

“We will ensure that not one litre of waste water gets into the Fall River.we will have a waste management and treatment facility that will convert the waste into energy. We will treat the waste water, so that we can now supply it to the farmers around as irrigation water,” Senator Grant told JIS News.
With this in place, the CEO said the factory will not only “supply the finest coffee in the world,” but will be doing so in an environmentally friendly way.
The Mavis Bank Coffee Factory is Jamaica’s largest and only fully integrated Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee facility. Approximately 1.4 million pounds of green beans from over 6,000 farmers are processed there annually.
Environmentally friendly (also eco-friendly, nature friendly, and green) are synonyms used to refer to goods and services, laws, guidelines and policies considered to inflict minimal or no harm on the environment.
