Ruel B. Reid was born in the rural district of Content in Balaclava, St. Elizabeth. He received his early formal education at the Balaclava Basic School and Balaclava Primary School from where he moved on to attend Munro College. He pursued higher education at the University of the West Indies, Mona; Nova Southeastern University; Bethlehem Moravian College and Liberal Arts College of Jamaica. He holds Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management (Hons), a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies and a Diploma in Education.

Senator Reid has had a distinguished career in teaching which began in 1996 when he joined the academic staff at his alma mater Munro College. Since then he has had numerous achievements which include being appointed Master Teacher in 2003.

He has served the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) in numerous ways such as St. Elizabeth parish representative to the General Council, member of the Secondary and Credentials Committee and Chair of the St. Elizabeth parish debating committee. In 2004 he was elected President and served as President-Elect (2004-2005) and as the 38th president from 2005-2006.

Senator Reid has received several awards recognizing his work in Education. He was conferred with the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) in 2011. Other awards include the Vocational Award for Excellence from the Rotary Clubs of St. Andrew and Downtown Kingston in 2007 and 2009 respectively and awards for excellence from Kingston Book Shop and the St. Elizabeth Homecoming Foundation.

He has served as Board Member of Family Life Ministries, Caribbean Examinations Council, HEART Trust – National Training Agency (NTA) and as chairman of the Audit Committee of HEART Trust – NTA; Chairman of the National Council on Education (NCE), Chairman of the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) and Special Advisor to the Minister of Education.

Senator Reid has been the principal of Jamaica College since 2006.

He was appointed a Senator and Minister of Education, Youth and Information in March 2016.

A Justice of the Peace for the parish of St. Andrew, His hobbies include cricket, football, tennis and reading.

He is married to wife Sharen and has two children.
