Tribute to Dr. Olive Lewin

The Jamaican High Commission in London joins with the UK Jamaican community to express sadness at the news of the death of pioneering Jamaican musicologist and social anthropologist, Dr. Olive Lewin who was the founder of the Jamaica Folk Singers.

High Commissioner, Her Excellency, Aloun Ndombet-Assamba described Dr. Lewin as a leader in popularising Jamaican folk musicnot only in Jamaica but internationally.

Many in the Jamaican community remember the tours to the United Kingdom by the Jamaican Folks Singers led by Dr. Lewin, with great pride and fondness.  These visits brought to a wide audience, the rich tapestry of tradition Jamaican music and songs.

The High Commissioner said Dr. Lewin who studied music and ethnomusicology in the UK was a wonderful ambassador for Jamaica. And High Commissioner Assamba added that that Dr. Lewin’s Fellowship of Trinity College, London, her association with the Royal Academy of Musicand the Royal School of Music, brought a well deserved respect for traditional Jamaican music forms.
