Transport Ministry in Dialogue on Privatization of JRC

The Ministry of Housing, Transport, Water and Works is currently in dialogue with interested parties regarding the privatization of the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC).
This was announced by Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Robert Pickersgill, during his contribution to the 2007/08 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, yesterday (May 30).
“An evaluation of China CMC Engineering Company’s technical and financial proposals as well as a cost benefit analysis of the project is being undertaken by the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ),” Mr. Pickersgill told the House.
“The DBJ is also to update the relevant studies, which were done several years ago, to identify the potential for freight between Kingston and Montego Bay and the regulatory framework, which would be required to support the privatisation of the JRC,” he added.
Mr. Pickersgill said that while the Government continued to actively pursue options, the JRC would ensure that it is positioned to fulfil its obligations under the Track User Agreement with WINDALCO bauxite company, which include adequate repairs and maintenance to permanent structures, the provision of security of operations in the corridor, and adequate monitoring of track maintenance works being effected by WINDALCO.
